Description

Renowned scholar George M. Lamsa, the translator of this Bible, grew up in the Middle East speaking Aramaic, steeped in a culture with customs, manners, and language almost identical to those in the time of Jesus. These resources are all brought to bear on his life’s work of translating the Aramaic Scriptures – called the Peshitta – into English.

Why We Recommend This Item

Unlike the majority of the versions and translations commonly used, the Lamsa Bible was translated from the Aramaic (the language spoken by Jesus Christ and the disciples) rather than the Greek. In some cases the Aramaic manuscripts may have been copied from texts older than those available in Greek. In other cases, an understanding of the Aramaic makes it possible to correct mistranslations by translators who were not as familiar with Aramaic as with Greek and who weren't raised speaking Aramaic as Dr. Lamsa was. This can be seen in places like Matthew 27:46, covered in the Foundational Class of Power for Abundant Living, where instead of reading "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me", the Aramaic reads "My God, my God, for this purpose was I spared (or reserved)." Dr. Lamsa completed his translation of the Old Testament while staying in Dr. and Mrs. Wierwille's home.
