Description

With over 2,000 entries on the Bible’s books, people, places, and key words, as well as maps, family trees, charts and illustrations, the New Bible Dictionary has been a standard reference work for over 50 years. The articles covering many topics include the latest archaeological finds and information on the history, geography, and customs of Israel and its Middle Eastern neighbors.

Why We Recommend This Item

When building your library of tools for working God’s Word, there are some basic ones whose names can give you a misleading idea of what they are or what they used for. What we normally refer to as a “dictionary – a book that gives the definitions of words and their different usages – in biblical studies is generally called a “lexicon”. On the other hand, a “Bible dictionary” such as this one is more like what we would typically refer to as an encyclopedia, a book that gives you the background and history of people, places and things mentioned in the Scriptures. So, for example, if you wanted to know what the word "righteousness" means in the Bible, you would go to a lexicon. But if you wanted to know more about the city of Ephesus or how much weight a "talent" represents or more about King Nebuchadnezzer, you would come to the Bible Dictionary. There are a number of good Bible dictionaries available on the market. This one has been a respected standard one for many years and is a good building block for your library
